I really enjoyed the Black List, however, this novel is a bit lame. No turns, rather foreseeable, limited cliff hangers, black and white...
For those unfamiliar with the character, Scot Harvath is a former Navy SEAL who, after distinguishing himself with the SEAL teams, has worked closely with the president in the secret service, and now works as an elite counter-terrorism specialist who conducts all kinds of risky black ops missions off the books for a private group contracted by the United States government. Having done this work for many years he has developed both a reputation and many enemies. In this 19th book of the Scot Harvath series, Harvath’s former boss and several close acquaintances including his new wife have been assassinated at a safe house where his boss, who had advanced dementia, had been living. Harvath has gone missing and, while he is initially suspected of being the killer, he has actually been kidnapped, tortured for information, and is now in the process of being flown to Russia for advanced interrogation when the transport plane he’s aboard suffers catastrophic mechanical problems and crashes in an unknown, harsh and snowy, blizzard area in Russia. Having miraculously survived the crash, and with no way to get help, Harvath now has to rely upon all of his training and survival skills to not only escape his captors but to survive the harsh winter conditions all the while being hunted by Russian mercenaries under orders from the Russian president to find him and recapture him.For those familiar with the Harvath series, this book is very different from the usual adventures in the series. Almost the entire book is devoted to all of the obstacles Harvath has to overcome as he tries to save himself and get to safety in nearby Finland. There is plenty of intrigue, suspense, and action, but it is Harvath’s struggle to survive that really keeps you turning the pages of this book. Thor makes you really feel Harvath’s pain, exhaustion, and sense of urgency. While each of the chapters is short, and there are lots of opportunities to stop reading for a while, I found myself compelled to keep reading. I got the book last night, read about half of it then and finished reading it today. I had great difficulty putting it down. It is that good.My only criticism of this book is the ending feels quite rushed. I can’t really say more without spoiling the read, but I do wish the last 50 or 60 pages had been saved for the next book in the series because there would have been plenty there to expand upon and make a lot more interesting. That said, the book has a definite ending to the story, so you don’t have to worry about having to buy the next one just to reach an ending.I have read almost all of Brad Thor’s Harvath series of books, missing only two or three of the latest ones. All are great books to read that will really hold your interest, and Backlash is no exception. If you have never read any of the previous books in the series, don’t worry. This book stands on its own and does not require knowledge from reading any of the previous books in the series. I highly recommend it.I try to write informative product reviews. It has been a few years since I read a novel by Brad Thor. Not sure the reason that I have not recently but glad that I read this one. For me, being a retired USN Chief, it doesn't get any better than to read a thrilling novel with Scot Harvath, a SEAL, as the main character. Go Navy! This one does not disappoint ...not for one page. The reader will read about survival skills that Scot Harvath has and will be amazed at his stealth, strength and perseverance. No rescue posse on its way, so his individual ingenuity and previous training both as a SEAL and black ops are relied on heavily. The fact that Russia is involved in this novel made it more interesting to me... Enjoy a novel when it speaks to current events. And, the location...talk about a snowy adventure...this is it...The novel is fast-paced, plot is multi-layered, and the characters are well defined. I always appreciate a novel when the protagonists and antagonists are evenly divided.Buckle up your seat belt and settle in for a ride filled with action, adventure and suspenseful situations that seem insurmountable...until Scott proves them to be wrong.I found it to be well written and a most entertaining and excruciating read, at times. Most highly recommended.
My congratulations to you, Mr. Thor. It's indeed rare that an author can put such a great (albeit profoundly tragic) story to paper, and yet do it immediate violence through crude implausibility injected with a profoundly hateful characterization of Russia. Having opened a review in this way, I feel compelled to say that I have no Russian or slavic blood, have never lived or worked in or near Russia (although have visited a few times), despise the current Russian regime as much as you and others, and have read and loved every book you've published. So, no axe to grind. I may be different than other readers of this genre but I love plausibility interspersed in the action of a good story, because that's what makes it a great story. 90% historical or contemporary fact, 10% fiction. As such, the need to berate or misrepresent the quality of Russian airplanes, food, smells, locks, presidential security, etc., was wholly unnecessary and in my opinion devalued the quality of this read. Want examples? "Russian apartment buildings had always seemed to smell the same to him—******g horrible. He didn’t know what caused it. At its foundation, it had to be the cooking, but from there it was anybody’s guess." Yes, indeed the corridors smell unpleasant. But we both know it's a combination of the heavy lead based paint and woeful lack of maintenance. Surely you have been in a Russian apartment and seen the multiple stainless steel fortress like locks on heavy steel doors. Surely too you have enjoyed their many mouth-watering, wonderfully prepared native, comfort-food like dishes. So, as I know you realize, not everything in Russia is "piece of ****." Nor are there small towns in Russia where you can go to a town center restaurant and order cheeseburgers. This would be the rarest of things. Nor would presidential security for a family member be anywhere near as lax as you described. Nor would anyone make it 6 hours in a car to the Belarussian border, let alone beyond it, after what happened near the end, even if the event preceding the drive was possible. Unneeded creative licence, in my humble opinion. No plausibility. Conversely, with an amazingly accurate sense for the local language, you captured the dialog between Christina and Scot, as flawlessly as if it had been real. Christina spoke exactly like a real such person would have. Why such penchant for realism here but not everywhere? Mystifies me.Â
